This ONE Targeting Signal Increased Cold Email Replies by 267%
What if I told you that two identical cold email campaigns, targeting the same ideal customer profile, could produce wildly different results? I’m talking about a 15% positive reply rate versus a staggering 55% positive reply rate. Same copy. Same ICP. Completely different outcomes.
The secret? One simple targeting signal that changed everything.
The Original Campaign: Already Performing Well
Let me set the scene. The original campaign was actually performing quite well by industry standards. We were getting a 6.24% total reply rate with about one in six replies being positive – that’s roughly 15% of all replies. And here’s the kicker: our call to action wasn’t some low-commitment “want a free audit?” or “here’s a PDF.” We were literally asking, “Do you want to have a meeting?”
That’s a big ask. And we were still getting solid results.
This told us a few important things. First, we were targeting the right ICP segment. Second, our messaging was on point. Third, our offer resonated with the audience. Everything was working as it should. This was already a campaign most marketers would be thrilled with.
But I wondered: could we do better?
The Experiment: Changing Just ONE Variable
I decided to run an experiment. I duplicated the entire campaign – same copy, same offer, same everything – with one exception. I changed the targeting method.
The results? Absolutely mind-blowing.
The new campaign achieved a 7.08% total reply rate (slightly higher than the original), but here’s where it gets interesting. Out of 900 emails sent, we received 40 total replies. Of those 40 replies, 22 were positive. That’s a 55% positive reply rate. More than one in two people who replied said yes to a meeting.
Let that sink in for a moment. We went from 15% to 55% positive replies by changing nothing but how we identified our targets.
The Secret: Engagement-Based Targeting
So what was the magic ingredient? We integrated Apify with Clay to scrape people who were actively engaging with a competitor’s LinkedIn posts.
Think about it. On LinkedIn today, everyone’s posting content to build their email lists and grow their following. If you can identify a competitor who targets the same ICP as you and solves a similar problem, then everyone engaging with their content is essentially raising their hand and saying, “I have this problem and I’m actively looking for solutions.”
These aren’t just random people who fit your demographic profile. These are prospects who are demonstrating real-time intent. They’re liking posts, commenting, and engaging with content specifically about the problem you solve. That’s a targeting signal you simply can’t ignore.
How to Implement This Strategy
The technical implementation is actually quite straightforward, especially if you’re already using modern lead generation tools. Apify integrates seamlessly with Clay, which makes the entire process much easier than you might think.
Here’s the workflow: You identify competitors who are getting significant engagement on their LinkedIn posts. Then, you use Apify’s actor to scrape all the people engaging with those posts – both likes and comments. The data flows directly into Clay through their native integration, where you can set up an action column called “run Apify actor” that executes per row of your table.
Once you’ve pulled in all the engagement data, you send it to a second table where each person who engaged with the competitor’s post becomes a row. From there, you enrich the data with additional information, verify email addresses, and load them into your outbound campaign using tools like Instantly or SmartLead.
Why This Works So Well
The reason this targeting method is so effective comes down to one word: intent.
Traditional cold email targeting relies on firmographic data – company size, industry, job title, location, and so on. While these factors help you identify who might need your service, they don’t tell you who needs it right now.
Engagement-based targeting flips this on its head. You’re not guessing based on demographics. You’re observing actual behavior that indicates current interest in solving the exact problem you address. When someone engages with a competitor’s post about the challenge you solve, they’re essentially entering the market for your solution.
The timing couldn’t be better, and your message lands when they’re already thinking about the problem.
The Bottom Line
We went from a 15% positive reply rate to a 55% positive reply rate – that’s a 267% increase – by changing nothing but our targeting methodology. The copy was identical. The offer was identical. The ICP was essentially the same. The only difference was identifying people based on their demonstrated interest rather than their demographic profile.
This isn’t about working harder or sending more emails. It’s about working smarter by reaching people at the exact moment they’re most receptive to your message. And in the world of cold outbound, timing and relevance are everything.
If you’re still relying solely on traditional firmographic targeting for your cold email campaigns, you’re leaving serious results on the table. The future of outbound is signal-based, intent-driven targeting – and the future is already here.
